I WANT TO BE YOU

...found this video intriguing today after a 'politically completely wrong' (therefore no more quotation marks from this point on) conversation with Daisy yesterday about predetermination or indeterminacy of male or female visual statements, mainly observed and studied on means of public transport. Seen that France de Griessen and Francois Sagat are both appearing super stereotyped and Sagat is a male gay porn actor - creating some kind of visual statement vs. context counter-information resulting in the pleasurable flavor of an intensely splintering audio-visual experience ... dunno. what do you think...?

Maja Ratkje - "Voice"

"All sound on Voice originates from Maja Ratkje's throat, though it has been much manipulated, processed, torn, stretched, pitch-shifted and who knows what else. The human voice is as close to home as an instrument can be and the impression of this music is of naked immediacy despite its manipulation. But that immediacy does not result in yet another restatement of the known but in revelations of strangeness, of travels beyond the known".

CD released by Rune Grammofon in 2002.

90s called they want their everything back

hey,
I'm posting something that I find rather intriguing. A new video by the estonian pop princess Kerli. she won somekinda tv superstar competition when she was a teenager, then went to sweden to get produced and finally ended up in LA where she has been for the last 4 years. she is signed to def jam and will release her 2nd album this year. she has been super active using all the internet channels you can think of and has managed to get a considerable following, yet she is not a household name by any means, more like an internet phenomenon.

the thing is that estonians have a massive pop cultural complex because basically no estonian has made it big internationally, arvo pärt does not count, im talking about radio pop. so the whole nation is waiting for kerli to break through in the states - cannot predict whether she will. what is funny about her is that she is (marketed as) a bit of a weirdo - i find it interesting as in general, there has been a massive psychedelia but also 90s newageymusic comeback, she somehow flirts with all these things, for example she has started this "moon children" movement and talks constantly about "love-peace-unity". when i read the comments it seems to me that most of her fans are like a bit "alternative" US teenagers (with a fringe or smth) who seem to be into this kind of strange but still utterly mainstream stuff.

kerli has been compared to lady gaga and although their reference points are completely different, the fact that the music sounds so lame 90s eurodance is probably something that they both share. once again shows how this kind of artists function more as "visual" phenomenons and the music is just designed to please the "everyman's" ear, focusing mainly on uh-uhs, eh-ehs, oh-ohs and so on. i still cannot understand how it is possible to extract tiny parts of everything and come up with this kind of mainstream monstermix. but she is creative 4 sure, so is gaga. just do not like the necessity to constantly turn everything into marketing and target group analysis.

ps. if you are wondering whether i know kerli then the answer is no but i know loads of people who do, the country is just sooo small. of course i want her to make it. cnn featured her in somekinda futurisms-list so we'll see

Fever Ray: Towards a Diagrammatic Conception of the Voice

A few notes, in relation to my writings on the course, as well as an earlier post on my personal blog. Hopefully, I will be able to organize this into more coherent pieces soon.
  • Music is a molecular deterritorialization and machining of the voice, which pushes it away from language/signifying chains, and molar segments of man/woman.
  • There is a question of a fully-real becoming other, which has nothing to do with imitation or symbolic representation.
  • Taking DeLanda's reading of D&G's concept of the body without organs as a virtual body plan, out of which fully formed species and organisms differentiate, we have the basics for a diagrammatic conception of the voice (in the form of a neo-materialist idea of the genesis of the voice, opposed to the psychoanalytic idea of the maternal voice pre-birth).
  • The problem is, then, how to differentiate the voice; to unfold its immanent virtualities, as opposed to (as Kaja Silverman does) localize points where it produces sexual difference.
  • This, in turn, means conceiving of new media technologies not as "acoustic mirrors" (Silverman), or as the "analysts room" (Penman), but rather as a "possibility-space" (DeLanda), which is diagrammatic rather than fantasmatic, and which is characterized not so much by symbolic representation as by (what I'd like to call) electronic differentiation.
  • In other words, it is all about rendering imperceptible forces perceptible (D&G).
  • Fever Ray, in her music, uses sonic media in this way, in order to differentiate her voice electronically.
  • It is no longer the voice of Karin-Dreijer Andersson, but a voice of a pure otherness, beyond the realm of fantasmatics.
  • We do not yet know what a voice can do (modification of the Spinozist-influenced premise that Steve Goodman takes as his starting point in Sonic Warfare).

"i got that future soul/that digital spit"

a forensically close listen to the hits of the Black Eyed Peas suggests that they are the populist vanguard of vocal science today

which makes will.i.am's tribute/heist here of buggles's vocally-processed "video kills the radio star" fitting

that song's guest-voxist nicki minaj contributed a glistening pearl of autotuned chorus to this stray gem off lil wayne's misbegotten :rock" album from early 2010
